Saturday, May 24 - Our Annual Florida-friendly Yard Tours in North Port. See real examples of yards that are Florida-friendly by using drought-tolerant/native plants, trees, and shrubs. Get ideas, get inspired to create a yard that not only attracts wildlife but is one that you can enjoy! Begins at 9:00 AM from 3597 Froude St. (Salford Blvd. to one mile NORTH of Price. Left onto Dureve, follow to Froude.) From there you'll get directions to the other yards. $5.00 donation per person for the entire tour. All yards will be open from 9-2. Recent involvements in the community: We were very busy for Earth Day '08! We took part in the day-long celebration at Toledo Blade Elementary doing "tree-mendous" presentations to about 20 classes throughout the day. We finished the day by planting a beautiful Sweetgum in their courtyard. We also gave a tree planting demonstration at Heron Creek Middle School as a number of classes joined together to plant four trees on campus. Over at Vineland Elementary School in Englewood we invited second graders to "Plant a tree for Earth Day" for only $2.00 and about 100 students took us up on our offer! On Saturday, April 26, from 10-12, we sold one-gallon native trees for only $2.00 to Toledo Blade Elementary students (regular price is $5.00)in front of the Dollar Port at Price/Toledo Blade Blvds.
Dedicated a tree in our Tree Walk along Tamiami Trail in memory of Jerry Kostka, charter member and avid supporter of People for Trees who passed away last year.
Conducted a hike along the Myakkahatchee Creek
Spoke to the Grandmothers Club of Harbor Cove.
Designed and installed a Florida-friendly landscape in the pool area of the North Port Family YMCA.
Sponsored a "Great Tree Hunt" Contest in celebration of Florida Arbor Day in January.
Planted sweetgum trees at Lamarque Elementary School with Daisy Troop #52 and Cub Scout Pack #258
Planted sweetgum trees with Cub Scout Pack #257 at the Garden of the Five Senses and planted a magnolia tree to honor the VFW #8203 for Veteran's Day 2007.
Participated in the North Port Poinsettia Parade and the 21st Annual Moose Hayride.
Sponsored an activity at the Boys and Girls Club Kids Day in September and at the North Port Library 1800's Christmas Event in December.
,Sponsored the Mote Marine Exhibit for the Eco-Kids in December.
Installed a Florida-friendly landscape for Cohen Homes at Suburban/Harwood featured in the North Port Sun.
Planted trees at North Port High School with Mrs. David's Environmental Science Classes for Florida Arbor Day in January.
People for Trees conducts hikes along the Myakkahatchee Creek in North Port upon request. Call 426-9752.

People for Trees, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group founded in 1997 that strives to create awareness about the importance of our native tree canopy.

During the "Meet the Creek" club sessions, the Eco-Kids had a "swinging time!
ECO-KIDS CLUB

"Eco-Kids" Club meets once a month on Saturdays and is open to all children who would like to explore their Florida environment! Every session brings a new Florida adventure! Recommended for ages 5 and up. All sessions are from 10-12 NOON. Advance registration is not required (except when noted) but all children must be accompanied by an adult. A $1.00 donation per child is suggested. Call 426-9752 for more information.

April 12 – “Fossil Find in the Creek!” Keith Wilson from Sarasota County 4-H will lead the way while we search for fossils in the Myakkahatchee. Prepare to GET WET! The Oaks Park
May 10- Our Annual End-of-the-Eco-Kids-Year-Eco-Boat Tour. We leave from the “Grande Tours” boat dock, where 771/775 meet in Placida. 9:00 AM SHARP! $5.00/kids, $10.00/adults. Take a tour along Gaspirilla Island and then the boat anchors in an estuary and we go exploring. You might even get to see a dolphin or two! Return back around 11:00 AM.RESERVATIONS REQUIRED AS SEATING IS LIMITED.426-9752



How to get to:
Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, North Port Directions: North on Sumter Blvd. ( Exit 182 from I-75) to the "T". Tropicare. Make a left then first right, Reistertown Rd. Follow to park entrance, about one mile.

The Oaks Park in North Port. Directions: North on Sumter to Lady Slipper, make a left. (from I-75, Exit 182 to Lady Slipper - about 1/2 down on your right) Continue on Lady Slipper which will curve around and the park will be on your left. Road has very big potholes, so be careful!
North Port Community Center, 4940 Pan Am Blvd. North Port ( Rt. 41 to Pan American. Center is about 1/4 mile up on your right.)
< Dress appropriately. Sneakers/long pants are recommended for sessions in the woods.
